Garko signing official, Gaby Hernandez DFA’d

Ryan Garko is officially a Mariner, and right-handed pitcher Gaby Hernandez was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.

Hernandez, 23, came to Seattle from the Florida Marlins in exchange for Arthur Rhodes in a 2008 trade deadline deal, notable as being the only trade swung by interim GM Lee Pelekoudas after replacing fired Bill Bavasi, Hernandez was 10-9 with a 5.23 ERA in 26 starts for Tacoma last year.

Here’s a Jack Zduriencik quote from the press release: “We are happy to add Ryan to our major-league roster. We think he is a player that adds versatility as a right-handed hitter with experience playing first base, designated hitter and catcher.”

P.S. I’m a little taken aback by the controversy (in some corners of the blogosphere) over my link to USS Mariner in the last post.. There was no hidden agenda, no attempt to juice up blog hits. I link to a lot of sites in this blog, and I thought it was an interesting perspective. If someone offered the same perspective in the blog comments and feels slighted, I apologize.
