I’m safely ensconced at the beautiful Courtyard Marriott in Melbourne, Florida after a stressful day of traveling. As I tweeted a little while ago, you know you’ve made this trip frequently when you remember exactly where the Arby’s is in Melbourne. (Not that I ate there, but I knew where it was).
Tomorrow, I’ll be heading out to Nationals camp to talk to two former Mariners managers, Jim Riggleman and his bench coach, John McLaren (a reversal of their arrangement in Seattle). They’ve got a huge challenge ahead of them, but things are looking up for the Nats — mainly because they can’t get much worse. They shook up their roster, adding Ivan Rodriguez, Jason Marquis, Matt Capps, Adam Kennedy and Chien-Ming Wang, among others, and have some interesting young talent on the way, led of course by St. Stephen Strasburg. I’ll check in with him, if possible, but I understand the Nationals are limiting his interviews. If nothing else, I’ll talk to others about him.
After that, I’ll circle the Grapefruit League, hopefully finding a lot of interesting fodder for stories, columns, blogs, tweets, radio interviews, and whatever other medium is invented in the next 10 days. I can’t wait to get started.
One more thing: I’ll do a live chat Thursday at 1 p.m. Pacific time. We can talk about what I’ve seen and whatever other baseball topics are on your mind. Mark it down.
