Let’s take a break from Ken Griffey Jr. “Sleepgate” and look at today’s minor-league report.
Garrett Olson turned in a nice outing for Tacoma despite taking a loss, giving up just one earned run in eight innings against Las Vegas while striking out six. Olson has a 3.41 ERA in seven games, five of them starts.
With the Mariners’ major-league catchers continuing to struggle — Adam Moore is at .170, Rob Johnson .140 — I continue to check out the three catchers with major-league experience currently in the Mariners’ minor-league system. At Tacoma, Josh Bard is at .231 with a homer and 10 RBI, while Eliezer Alfonzo is at .259/0/5. At West Tennessee, Guillermo Quiroz is at .338/3/14, but he’s currently on the seven-day DL with a bruised knee.
The name that caught my eye today is Nate Tenbrink , a 23-year-old outfielder at High Desert, who has his average up to .393 with four homers and 27 RBI. Tenbrink has a .458 on-base percentage and .624 slugging percentage. He was a seventh-round selection in the 2008 draft out of Kansas State University. Tenbrink is 6-2, 201 and hits left, throws right.
