UPDATE: Here’s some audio the Mariners provided from Felix Hernandez, talking about his award at a season ticket holder’s event today.

And here’s more audio of Eric Wedge and Felix from the same event.

It’s not the biggie — the American League’s Cy Young winner will be revealed on Nov. 18 — but Felix Hernandez has racked up an impressive honor. He was named the AL’s Pitcher of the Year by Sporting News, which distributed ballots to all 30 teams, and had 326 players, 24 general managers and 25 managers participate in the voting.

Hernandez’s peers were able to overlook his 13-12 record. Will the 28 scribes from the Baseball Writers Association of America who voted for the Cy Young? I firmly believe that will happen, but we’ll have to wait another month to find out. (By the way, I promise I’ll reveal my Cy Young vote soon in a separate blog post, but I was sidetracked by the Mariners’ managerial search).

Texas’s Josh Hamilton was named Player of the Year. Here are the major winners of Sporting News awards:

One other item of business: the Mariners announced they will wear “Northwest” green alternate jerseys on Monday and Friday home homes beginning next season. They were originally introduced during the 1994 season.

There’s even a quote from Jack Zduriencik in the news release: “When we brought the green jerseys back for this past year’s “Turn Back the Clock Day”, our fans and players told us they enjoyed the retro style, therefore we will make this a part of our 2011 uniform look.”

The green jerseys will only be an alternate option for home games, the Mariners said. The dark navy tops, the previous alternate jersey, will now be a road-only option.

Here’s a look at the jerseys during the June 5 “Turn Back The Clock” game (photo by Jim Bates of the Seattle Times):
