Here are the 2011 Mariners, for better or worse

This is not a good day to be a Cal Golden Bear. First, the men’s basketball team gets destroyed last night by Washington, the women fall to the Huskies, and now comes the real bummer, news that Cal will indeed cut its baseball program. I explained last September, when word of Cal baseball’s impending demise first hit, what the program meant to me. I honestly thought there was a chance it could be saved, but it was not to be. A very sad day in Berkeley, one I hope is not a harbinger of things to come at other colleges and universities. As my pal John Crumpacker of the San Francisco Chronicle writes, baseball is the most expensive sport to fund.

Now, on to the Mariners, whose pitchers and catchers will report to camp in Peoria, Ariz., on Sunday. First workout is Monday. Here’s a look at the 63 players (barring any last-minute additions, or subtractions) who will be on hand by the time the full squad reports next Friday. These include the 40-man roster, plus 23 non-roster players:

*NON-ROSTER INVITEE

One thing that strikes me is that while the Mariners have definitely become Jack Zduriencik’s team — he is responsible for bringing in 60 percent of the 40-man roster (24 players) — Bill Bavasi’s fingerprints can still be seen. Thirteen of the 40-man roster — 32.5 percent — came in under his watch, while three go all the way back to the Pat Gillick regime (including the team’s two cornerstones). Here is how it breaks down:
