Edgar Martinez showed up in Peoria today, walked into the Mariners clubhouse, and immediately was greeted with hugs by Miguel Olivo and Felix Hernandez. Olivo was teammates with Martinez during his previous Mariner stint.
As the pictures above show, Martinez one of several former Mariner greats serving a stint as a guest coach. He put on his familiar No. 11 uniform and stood behind the batting cage during the morning workout. That’s Gabe Gross at the plate in the first picture with Martinez observing, while in the bottom picture he’s walking off the field with Brendan Ryan.
Former Mariner catcher Dan Wilson has already been in camp and in uniform for a couple of days, and we’re told that Jay Buhner has also shown up, though I haven’t see him. Word is he was on the minor-league side of the complex. Martinez, Wilson and Buhner combined to play in 4,746 games in a Mariner uniform.
The big question now is when Ken Griffey Jr., who was hired as a special assistant by the Mariners in February, will show up. Now that his buddies from the Griffey glory days are here, I wouldn’t be surprised if Griffey’s arrival takes place soon.
