Cougar for a day at Safeco Field

That’s me decked out from head to toe –well, actually head to waist — in Washington State University garb today at Safeco Field, where I’m covering the Mariner-Blue Jay game.

I’m a man of my word, and last November, I had a friendly wager with KJR’s Jason Puckett on the Cal-WSU football game, which I attended in Pullman.

Puckett, as KJR listeners are well aware, is an obnoxious, er, passionate Washington State supporter, while I attended Calwhile Puckett was still in diapers (though, come to think of it, he might still be in diapers. That’s the word on the street, anyway).

Our bet was simple: the loser had to wear the colors of the other’s school at an early-season Mariners game.

I’m happy to report that Cal won the game, 20-13. But we bet the point spread, and Cal was favored by something like nine, so they didn’t cover. Bottom line: Cal won, I lost.

Of course, any self-respecting person would be ashamed to collect on a bet in which his team actually lost the game. Puckett was delighted to collect. You connect the dots.

Here’s Jason gloating in the press box a few minutes ago. Now I have to head downstairs wearing this ridiculous outfit and hope no one in the clubhouse notices.

Puck, just wait until Nov. 5, 2011, when these two teams have the rematch in Berkeley (actually, San Francisco’s AT&T Park, while Memorial Stadium is renovated). I’ll see you next April at Safeco wearing your Cal hat and sweatshirt.
