Mariners’ early-season hitting woes extend to the farm (includes minor-league report)

Here is today’s minor-league report.

You probably haven’t noticed (ha ha), but the Mariners once again are not exactly bashing the ball this year. After a season of historically inept offense in 2010, their numbers after 13 games in 2011 aren’t much better:

Last year’s team batting average was .236. So far this year, it’s .218.

Last year’s on-base percentage was .298. So far this year, it’s .299 (and that’s despite leading the American League with 50 walks!).

Last year’s slugging percentage was .339. So far this year, it’s .322.

Last year’s OPS (on-base plus slugging) was .637. So far this year, it’s .620.

Last year, the Mariners scored 513 runs in 162 games — 3.2 per game. So far this year, they’ve scored 44 runs in 13 games — 3.4 per game.

Last year, the Mariners hit 101 homers — .62 per game. So far this year, they’ve hit 7 homers — .54 per game.

The discouraging news is that the offensive produrction is not going much better in the minor leagues, at least collectively. Certain individuals are off to hot starts, but all of the Mariners’ affiliates are struggling right now. It’s early, of course, and cold weather is a definite factor in such of these places, but the numbers aren’t good right now:

Class AAA Tacoma (3-5 record): 8 games, .217 team average, .295 on-base percentage, .318 slugging percentage, .614 OPS, 25 runs (3.1 per game), 4 homers.

Class AA Jackson (3-4 record): 7 games, .209 team average, .272 on-base percentage, .316 slugging percentage, .588 OPS, 19 runs (2.7 runs per game), 4 homers.

Class A High Desert (4-4 record): 8 games, .259 team average, .307 on-base percentage, .399 slugging percentage, .706 OPS, 31 runs (3.9 per game), 5 homers.

(Keep in mind that the California League is a notorious hitters’ league. Last year, High Desert went .296/.361/.475 and hit 172 homers in 140 games).

Class A Clinton (2-6 record): 8 games, .223 team average, .293 on-base percentage, .274 slugging percentage, .566 OPS, 24 runs (3.0 per game), 2 homers.
