Mariners minor league report, April 21

You can find the latest minor-league report here. And here is yesterday’s report, which I didn’t have time to post while I was covering the Mariners game.

If you wonder why Carlos Peguero got the call to replace Justin Smoak on the roster, look at the numbers for Matt Tuiasosopo and Mike Carp at Class AAA Tacoma. Tui is hitting just .188 in 14 games, while Carp is strugging even more at .137. Josh Bard has a hit in all 11 games he’s played this year and has a .302 batting average, but the fact he’s off the 40-man roster greatly complicates any potential promotion.

Dustin Ackley has his average up to .250 after a slow start, and his on-base percentage is a nice .364 (thanks to 10 walks, tied with Tuiasosopo for the team lead). Ackley has also stolen four bases in five attempts. Lefty reliever Royce Ring has recorded eight outs, and six of those are by strikeout, with just one walk. On the other hand, he’s given up five hits in those 2 2/3 innings.

At Class AA Jackson, outfielders Jake Shaffer (.393) and James McOwen (.340) continue to crush the ball. Outfielder Denny Almonte of Class A High Desert is the first person in the Mariner organization to reach four homers, and is tied with teammate Dennis Raben , a first baseman, with 14 RBIs in 14 games.
