Here is today’s Mariner minor-league report.
Did you notice who beat Tacoma last night? Old friend Ryan Rowland-Smith, now pitching for Houston’s Oklahoma City affiliate. Rowland-Smith worked six strong innings, limiting the Rainiers to six hits and a run.
It’s just not happening for Matt Tuiasosopo, whose average is down to .218. He’s struck out 39 times in 124 at-bats.
On the other hand, reliever Josh Lueke is making a nice showing in Tacoma since the Mariners sent him down. He worked a scoreless inning yesterday to lower his ERA in seven games to 0.93. In 9 2/3 innings, he’s given up just five hits, with six strikeouts and two walks.
Another pleasant development is taking place at Class AA, where Jackson shortstop Carlos Triunfel, the eternal Mariner prospect, has hit .480 (12-for-25) over his last seven games and has his average up to .294. Former first-round pick Josh Fields has held opponents to a .140 average, but his 16-12 strikeouts-to-walk ratio in 14 2/3 innings is worrisome.
Franklin Gutierrez had two hits as the DH in Tacoma’s 3-1 loss, which dropped their record to 12-21.
