Hot Stone League

Larry Stone gives his take on a wide array of baseball issues and weighs in about the Mariners, too.

The Mariners are (opposing) pitcher’s best friend: 20 examples

Here’s a logical companion piece for those of you who missed this post on Monday.

It seems like just about every other night, the Mariners’ opponent is pitching the game of his life. It’s hard to tell sometimes if the pitcher had a great night, or if he just had the great fortune of facing the Mariners.

Maybe this list will give a clue. It chronicles 20 games in which the starting pitcher dominated the Mariners, and then shows his record in all other games. I left out bona fide aces like Jered Weaver, Josh Beckett and C.C. Sabathia, who had some great games against the Mariners this year, and focused on some lesser known and/or more pedestrian hurlers.

My conclusion: Facing Seattle can be beneficial to the health of a pitcher’s ERA.
