I’m sure many of you saw the Mariner fan in the video above, wearing a Ken Griffey Jr. jersey and “King’s Court” crown, cost Kyle Seager a likely triple by interfering with his drive into the right-field corner in the fifth inning on Wednesday in Cleveland.
The fan made a nice left-handed grab of the ball, then sheepishly dropped it back onto the field when he realized what he had done. Miguel Olivo, who likely would have scored from first, was sent back to third, and Seager was held up at second. Both ended up scoring when Wily Mo Pena lashed a double into the left-field corner.
What you probably didn’t hear was the fan calling into MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM yesterday with a hilarious mea culpa. Turns out this guy lives in Seattle and is the ultimate Mariner fan — attended the first game in 1977, made a pilgrimmage to Cooperstown to see Dave Niehaus’s plaque, the works. He feels horrible about costing Seager a triple and RBI. He had driven to Cleveland with his son for the four-game series, after the stop in Cooperstown.Take a listen.
