Here is the latest Mariner winter league report, with gratitude to Kelly Munro of the Mariners, who does great work in compiling all this.
You can see the highlights yourself, but I wanted to note the work of last year’s No. 1 draft pick Danny Hultzen, who has a 1.62 ERA in five starts for Peoria in the Arizona Fall League. Hultzen has limited opponents to a .217 average (.077 against lefties). Hultzen and infielder Nick Franklin have been chosen to play in the AFL Rising Stars Game Saturday at 5:10 p.m. in Surprise, Ariz. The game will be televised live on MLB Network and MLB.tv.
The Mariners say they will give Hultzen a chance to win a job in their rotation. Another pitcher who could be a factor at some point in 2012 is Erasmo Ramirez, who is pitching well in Venezuela. He is 2-1 with a 1.74 ERA in four starts, limitinng opponents to a .230 average. His control is typically pinpoint — 12 strikeouts and just one walk.
Finally, a word about poor Yoervis Medina, a 23-year-old right-hander who is on the M’s 40-man roster. I know wins don’t mean everything, but he was 0-1 at Double-A Jackson this past season, and 1-13 at SIngle-A High Desert. Now he is 0-3 in three starts for Cardenales de Lara in Venezuela. That makes Medina a combined 1-17 this season.
