Hot Stone League

Larry Stone gives his take on a wide array of baseball issues and weighs in about the Mariners, too.

Here’s Mariners’ final 25-man roster

With today’s announcement that left-handed pitcher Charlie Furbush and outfielder Carlos Peguero have been optioned to Tacoma, the Mariners’ roster is set at 25 to re-open the season Friday in Oakland.

And heeeeeeeere they are:

Pitchers (12)

49 BEAVAN, Blake RHP

35 DELABAR, Steve RHP

34 HERNANDEZ, Felix RHP

18 IWAKUMA, Hisashi RHP

43 LEAGUE, Brandon RHP

25 MILLWOOD,Kevin RHP

45 NOESI, Hector RHP

50 RAMIREZ, Erasmo RHP

54 WILHELMSEN, Tom RHP

44 LUETGE, Lucas LHP

52 SHERRILL, George LHP

38 VARGAS, Jason LHP

Catchers (3)

27 JASO, John C

63 MONTERO, Jesus C

30 OLIVO, Miguel C

Infielders (7)

13 ACKLEY, Dustin INF

9 FIGGINS, Chone INF

61 KAWASAKI, Munenori INF

16 LIDDI, Alex INF

26 RYAN, Brendan INF

15 SEAGER, Kyle INF

17 SMOAK, Justin INF

Outfielders (3)

55 SAUNDERS, Michael OF

51 SUZUKI, Ichiro OF

33 WELLS, Casper OF

Disabled list: C Adam Moore, OF Franklin Gutierrez, OF Mike Carp

As you can see, the Mariners are carrying just three outfielders — sort of. Chone Figgins is really a fourth outfielder, and I could see him getting a lot of time in left while Mike Carp is on the disabled list (which could be just one week. Carp hopes to come off the DL for the home opener, which is a week from Friday. The Mariners will play just six games before then, so more decisions are looming soon). Figgins has played a lot of left since the team came back from Japan, and is in there again today.

That would mean that Kyle Seager, who has had an outstanding spring (.362 average, .745 slugging), could get the bulk of the time at third base, with Liddi available to back up both at third and first. Eric Wedge actually has a lot of different ways he can go. When Figgins plays third, then Casper Wells can play in left. Wells can also see time in center aheadof Michael Saunders against tough lefties. And then there’s Munenori Kawasaki and his .455 spring average to find a spot for at either shortstop (most likely), second or third. Wedge will be doing a lot of juggling.
