Hot off the presses, here are the Mariners’ minor-league rosters. (Scroll down to the end to see the rosters).
As you can see, the Mariners elected to keep their three young, highly touted pitchers , Danny Hultzen, James Paxton and Taijuan Walker, together on the Class AA Jackson (Tennessee) staff.
This had been widely speculated, and I think there’s good reason for this decision. One, the weather in Tennessee will be much better early in the season than in Tacoma. Two, this is a very good level of competition, and seems just about right for Hultzen, who is straight out of college, and Walker, who is just 19.
Paxton, who pitched at Double-A last year, could have moved up to Tacoma, but the Mariners are clearly trying to foster a bond among the three of them, and this just furthers that. They’d love to have a Maddux-Glavine-Smoltz kind of rapport build, or, to bring it closer, a Zito-Mulder-Hudson trio.
