Here is today’s minor-league report. The biggest news is the strong 2012 debut of heralded lefty James Paxton, who picked up the victory with 5 2/3 scoreless innings for the Double-A Jackson Generals. Paxton struck out 10, gave up just two hits and didn’t walk any in Jackson’s 2-1 win over Birmingham.
In two games, Jackson’s starters, Andrew Carraway and Paxton, hae combined to allow only four hits in 11 2/3 shutout innings, with 16 strikeouts and just one walk. Taijuan Walker and Danny Hultzen are also on the staff, but Brandon Mauer is scheduled to pitch today.
Tacoma had a nice comeback win, scoring five in the seventh to turn a 7-3 deficit into an 8-7 victory over Salt Lake. Vinnie Catricala scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch after hitting a game-tying double. Charlie Furbush and Shawn Kelley, two of the Mariners’ final spring cuts, combined to pitch five scoreless innings of relief, allowing just two hits, one walk and seven strikeouts.
Another late cut, Carlos Peguero, was 3-for-3 with a homer and double, while Trayvon Robinson also had three hits.
