Mariners minor-league report: Lots of movement in Seattle’s farm system

Sorry, I’ve fallen behind on minor-league reports due to travel, days off, and Mariners game coverage. So here is today’s report, as well as the previous three here and here, and here.

There has been a lot of movement up and down the ladder in the last few days, including today’s announcement that right-handed pitcher Andrew Carraway, who was shining with Double-A Jackson (4-0, 2.61 ERA in seven starts, with 32 strikeouts and just seven walks in 38 innings), has moved up to Triple-A Tacoma. Right-hander Brian Sweeney goes on the 7-day DL. Mike Curto’s blog has details on the current state of Tacoma’s rotation. When I was in Jackson a week ago, I heard a lot of good things about Carraway, including buzz that he could be a stealth candidate to make it up to Seattle fairly quickly.

Also today, High Desert first baseman Steven Proscia, who was hitting .347 with five homers and 20 RBIs, was promoted to Jackson because Rich Poythress was placed on the disabled list with a sprained left foot.

Outfielder Mario Yepez was transferred to Clinton from extended spring training, and outfielder Reggie Lawson was transferred to Peoria.

Here’s a new Seattle Times poll:

What should the Mariners do with slumping Justin Smoak?

Also, in recent days:

–Outfielder Carlos Peguero was activated from the DL and rejoined Tacoma. Peguero had injuried his knee on April 8 after batting .700 (7-for-10) in his first three games. The aforementioned Yepez was transferred to Peoria.

–Reliever Stephen Pryor, who really caught my eye in Jackson (not to mention Jack Zduriencik’s, when he saw him hit 100 mph in a game in Pensacola), was promoted to Tacoma. Left-hander Mauricio Robles was transferred to Jackson.

–Tacoma outfielder Johan Limonta left the team for two days to attend a naturilization hearing in Miami to become a U.S. citizen. Limonta defected from Cuba in 2004.

–Jackson outfielder Johermyn Chavez, who was really heating up at the plate, was placed on the DL (fractured hamate bone in left hand), Danny Carroll was activated from the DL (dislocated shoulder) for Jackson. Also for Jackson, LHP Steven Garrison was activated from the DL, and RHP Moises Hernandez (Felix’s brother) was placed on the DL (left shin contusion, not considered serious). Infielder Eddy Martinez-Esteve, a former second-round pick by the Giants, was reinstated from the DL and released.

–Outfielder Julio Morban was reinstated from the DL by High Desert, and infielder Carlos Ramirez was optioned back to Clinton.

–Infielders Bryan Brito and RHP Ben Cornwell were added to the Clinton roster from Peoria. To make room, RHP Wes Alsup, IF Jean Acevedo and OF Alfredo Morales were transferred to Peoria.
