The Mariners announced their minor-league coaching staff today, and most of their managers will be back in the same place. That includes Daren Brown returning for a seventh season at the helm of the Tacoma Rainiers, which is great to see, because does an outstanding job.

Brown will have a new hitting coach: None other than Howard Johnson, (pictured above) who was a switch-hitting slugger in his heyday, doing most of his damage with the Mets. HoJo, who is 52, had three seasons in which he hit more than 30 homers. He comes to the Mariners from the Mets organization, where he served three seasons (2008-10) as their major-league hitting coach. He replaces Jeff Pentland as Tacoma’s hitting coach. There’s no immediate word on Pentland’s status.

Jim Pankovits returns as manager of Jackson (AA), Eddie Menchaca at Clinton (A), Rob Mummau at Everett (rookie), Claudio Almonte in the Dominican League, and Russell Vasquez in Venezuela.

They have three new managers. One, James Horner, is actually returning to the organization after 2 1/2 years as associate head coach at Texas Tech University. Horner will manage High Desert (A), a post he held previously, winning California League Manager of the Year honors in 2009. Darrin Garner, previously Seattle’s minor league infield and baserunning coordinator, will manage their Arizona League affiliate, while Chris Prieto will manage Pulaski, a rookie-level team.

Terry Clark, who had been Texas’s Triple-A pitching coach, takes over that position for Jackson. Lance Painter, formerly Jackson’s pitching coach, will move to High Desert.

Here is their entire minor-league staffing list, with an asterisk indicating new hires for 2013:
