The provisional rosters for the World Baseball Classic were released today, and the Mariners have a sprinkling of representation from their organization. You can find all the rosters here.
Not surprisingly, that Mariner list is topped by Felix Hernandez’s presence on the Venezuelan roster. Michael Saunders is on Team Canada. Other player represented from Seattle’s 40-man roster are Alex Liddi (Italy) and Oliver Perez (Mexico).
Final rosters are due on Feb. 20, and the tournament begins in March at spring training venues in Arizona and Florida, as well as San Juan, Puerto Rico, Japan and Taiwan. Those four players will report to Mariners’ spring training in Peoria, Ariz., in February, then fan out to join their national teams in March if they are on the final roster.
Mariners minor leaguers who are on rosters include outfielder Kalian Sams (Netherlands), and three who will be with Brazil: shortstop Pedro Okuda, left-handed pitcher Luiz Gohara, and right-hander Thyago Vieria.. In addition, veteran pitcher Brian Sweeney, who pitched with Tacoma last year, is on Italy’s provisional roster. Sweeney is expected to sign back with the Mariners’ organization again.
