MEDIA DAY NOTES

Here are a few quick notes from Tyrone Willingham’s season kickoff news conference today.
• Willingham said four players will not be eligible for the start of practice today — DE Anthony Atkins, safety Ashlee Palmer, OT Aaron Mason and RB Leilyon Myers. He said all have academic situations that are “pending” and would not speculate on whether they will be able to play this year. Myers’ problem is with the NCAA Clearinghouse, while the other three simply have to finish up some work. Of those four, Mason and Palmer may be the most critical. Mason is expected to fill in the depth at left tackle and Palmer is expected to compete for a starting job at safety.
• Willingham said he expects RB J.R. Hasty, ineligible this year, to be back with the team in the future. He confirmed that Hasty is in school now and said, “I believe he will be back with the team in the future and will do very well.” As for the other three who were declared ineligible, Willingham said he would not speculate on whether they will be back. Word is, however, that WR Chancellor Young is unlikely to return.
• Willingham said that CB Dashon Goldson has a sprained ankle and will be limited for the start of practice. Goldson said he hurt the ankle during a vertical jump drill a few weeks ago. Goldson said he expects to be full go in a week or two.
• Willingham dropped what could be viewed as a potential bombshell when he said that Jake Locker could be used as some position other than quarterback — say special teams or safety. But later, when asked if it was “realistic” that could happen, he said it wasn’t. He said Locker will always be primarily a quarterback at UW but that he’s so gifted, it’s not inconceivable he could be called on at some other position.
• Kenny James attended the news conference and explained that he injured his wrist when he fell awkwardly during a 7-on-7 drill. He will wear a splint the first week or so of practice but said he expects to be full go soon.
• Willingham said Michael Gottlieb is the starting tight end entering camp with Robert Lewis and Johnie Kirton the backups. Kirton will remain primarily at tight end, Willingham said.
We’ll be back with more after practice this afternoon.
