Stanback redux

Went looking today for new news on Washington’s opponent this week — San Jose State — and couldn’t find any.
So I’ll link to my own story today on UW QB Isaiah Stanback just in case you missed it.
One thing I wasn’t able to get in the story is the influence of religion on Stanback’s life. He attends a church in the Central District every Sunday — Mount Calvary Christian Church — and said he considers himself “pretty religious.” In fact, he said he considers his two main mentors as Reggie Witherspoon Jr., the pastor at Mount Calvary, and Greg Alex, the former Huskies player who is now a pastor and works with the team.
“They keep me really grounded and focused,” Stanback said.
While writing that story, I debated putting together some sort of a chart comparing Stanback to other UW quarterbacks in modern history. Then I realized that there really is no adequate comparison — no other QB has gotten his starting job at a time when the program was as challenged as it is now so it would be unfair to statistically compare him to, say Marques Tuiasosopo, who also became a full-time starter for the first time as a junior.
What I can say after doing that story is that there doesn’t seem to be any lack of confidence among players and coaches that Stanback can do the job. And he knows it’s now up to him.
We’ll have more here later from practice.
