Looking back

My main story for today’s paper was a look at the 1985 Orange Bowl.
As with any story like this, there is so much more I could have gotten in that space didn’t allow.
Don James, for instance, talked a lot about how this was such an easy team to coach. He said the team was in Miam for two weeks and he had hardly any issues in terms of curfew, etc., a sign of how the team was focused to play.
Tony Casillas admitted that he thought a lot of OU players didn’t take the Huskies as seriously as they should have, mostly because the feeling at the time was that the Pac-10 was a little down. That was a season, however, when the Pac-10 won three New Year’s Day bowls — USC the Rose Bowl, UW the Orange and UCLA the Fiesta.
Barry Switzer, meanwhile, simply mentioned again and again that he thought UW was the better team and for all the talk of the Sooner Schooner, the Huskies would have won anyway.
Meanwhile, here’s a story from the Tulsa World about what has happened to the UW program in recent seasons. Maybe not much a lot of you haven’t heard before, but interesting in seeing an outsider’s take on it all.
