Pat Hill steamed (and more)

Fresno State is one of those programs always trying to prove its worth, generally carrying around more chips on its collective shoulder than Bally’s has on its tables.
So it shouldn’t have been a surprise that FSU coach Pat Hill went off this week when North Carolina State coach Chuck Amato implied that FSU is one of those programs successful only because it allows in a lot of academic non-qualifiers. This may not be good news for UW fans hoping that maybe the Bulldogs would come in flat this week after an exhausting loss against Oregon last Saturday.
Here’s today’s Fresno Bee story talking about QB Tom Brandstater and the fact that the Bulldogs haven’t had much success throwing deep so far this season. As I wrote today, it makes every sense in the world to think that FSU will try to do that Saturday. There’s also some stuff on Dwayne Wright in there. I talked with Wright the other day about the fact he originally signed with Washington State, then thought about following Mike Price to Alabama, and will have some of that in tomorrow’s paper. And at the bottom, there is more on the Hill-Amato dust-up.
Also, to answer a few reader questions:
One wanted to know the status of WR Alex Mercier, the walk-on who had such a good spring practice. He’s been hobbled all fall by a hamstring injury that he said occurred due to overuse. He thinks he may be able to play this weekend, but is definitely getting better and could be ready to go soon. Only problem now is working his way back into the rotation.
Another question was about the holdup in getting the JC guys cleared. I don’t know all the details as they are hard to get due to academic privacy concerns. Players can say what they want about it, but the schools usually won’t due to those privacy concerns, making it sometimes difficult to know the true story.
But JC guys are not subject to the NCAA Clearinghouse, which deals only with initial eligibility. So any holdup in JC transcripts is either due to the JC or the UW and not the Clearinghouse. Reasons for holdups can include the JC not yet posting scores, or because UW hasn’t yet decided to accept them. And since every four-year school has different standards, that’s why you see some guys get eligible in some places but not in others.
Here’s more information on the Clearinghouse for those so inclined.
