Pre-game thoughts

About 90 minutes until kickoff here and it seems like there’s a bit more of a buzz than before a lot of other games in recent years. As well there should be.
To keep you guys on the net buzzing as well, here are a few last-minute thoughts.
Will practice make perfect? Coach Tyrone Willingham said Thursday the Huskies had good practices all week, continuing where they left off the previous week when he thought they’d had their best practice week of the season prior to facing Fresno State.
But I never know what that really means. I remember Jim Lambright saying that after the Huskies were blasted 54-20 at Notre Dame in 1996, then they came back the next week and had a brutal week of practice. Lambright said even in the pre-game warmups he had no clue what to expect from his team. Then UW went out and beat UCLA 41-21, starting a six-game winning streak. Of course, that team had Corey Dillon.
No Husky weather here. After it rained all week, it seemed as if the Huskies might again greet UCLA with some November-like conditions. Instead, this is as beautiful a day here as I can remember. And it’s causing me to wonder when the last time it was that it was like this with UCLA in town. Every game with UCLA I can remember carried wind or rain or overcast skies or some combination of all three.
I never was able to make a note this week of the fact that the Fresno State game consisted of only 119 plays — 13 fewer than in either of the first two games. Not sure if it was the new clock rules or just the fact that each team ran a lot. Surely, it was some combination of both. But I think a similar low number of plays today would help the Huskies.
Again, keep checking back here during the game and afterward for more.
