Signs of life

Considering how badly UCLA dominated Washington for most of the half, the Huskies have to feel pretty luck to still be in this game.
The key play might turn out to be the corner blitz by Roy Lewis that turned into an eight-yard sack of Ben Olson after the Bruins had recovered a fumble at the UW 31-yard-line. UCLA couldn’t move and didn’t convert. If UCLA had scored any points there, the game might have been out of reach.
But the Huskies used the momentum of that stop to drive the other way. And for all the talk of all the other receivers on this team, it’s Sonny Shackelford that keeps making all the big plays.
Two notes of interest — Cody Ellis is playing quite a bit as a receiver, apparently taking time away from Marcel Reece, among others; and Dashon Goldson is now playing at CB ahead of Matt Fountaine, who was struggling to stop anybody.
UCLA had a yardage edge of 189-3 before that final drive by the Huskies to get on the board.
The key sequence of the game now could be UW’s first drive to start the third quarter. The Huskies will get the ball first after deferring to open the game.
We’ll see if the Huskies can win a second half, something they haven’t done to date this season.
