Friday’s picks

After a perfect 5-0 mark last weekend, I’m now 25-5 for the season.
But looking at all my colleagues who make similar picks each week, I see they all have about the same record. To date, the Pac-10 season has been pretty predictable — four unbeaten teams, four winless teams, two in-between. Just pick the unbeaten teams to beat the winless teams and you’re in business.
But this week matters start to get a little trickier. So here we go:
Notre Dame 45, Stanford 7 — OK, this one’s easy. Cardinal looks like one of the worst teams in the Pac-10 since the Beavers of the early 1980s who never won anything.
UCLA 24, Arizona 10 — Wildcats have to avoid looking ahead to their Titanic clash at Stanford next week. UCLA’s sked gets pretty rugged after this (at Oregon, at Notre Dame, WSU and at Cal in its next four).
Washington State 38, OSU 28 — Cougars get some revenge for a brutal loss in Corvallis last year when they gained 638 yards yet still were defeated. But OSU should be heavily motivated after a week of talk about the future of the program and coach Mike Riley.
Oregon 31, Cal 28 — OK, here’s the really tough one. The winner could emerge as the Pac-10 champ. I like Oregon’s defense a lilttle better than Cal’s — the Ducks are allowing one full yard less per play than Cal is so far (4.7 to 5.7). Oregon also seems more balanced offensively, averaging 6.2 yards per rush to Cal’s 4.7.
As always, we’ll save the UW pick for a little later.
