Stanback USC focus

It’s a beautiful Los Angeles morning, if you can ignore the smog. The Hollywood sign is barely visible through the smog from the press box.
As I write this at 11 a.m., there are already several thousand students in the stands and this looks like it will be close to a full crowd.
Both LA papers this morning featured stories on Isaiah Stanback and how he will be the focus of the Trojan defense. I’ll present the one from the LA Daily News since it doesn’t require registration.
I’d forgotten that it was Reggie Robertson who had so much to do with Cal’s win over USC in 2003 — he replaced Aaron Rogers and led the Bears much of the way in the late going.
But I think the quotes from the USC defensive players about not playing well last week may be bad news for UW. Sounds as if there’s no shortage of motivation for Troy.
Here also is the Daily News notebook which details USC”s injury problems. One key today will be USC true freshman WRs Vidal Hazelton and Travon Patterson. Hazelton is big receiver while Patterson is smaller, presumably in the Michael Bumpus-possession mode.
As I finish this up, Michael Braunstein is practicing field goals. He could be a real lkey for UW today, as well. He missed two long field goals – each in the mid-40 range — but also makeable kicks when UW was shut out here 38-0 in 2004. He also missed two last week and is just 5-11 for his career. Points figure to be precious today.
