The day after

A few thoughts and notes on the day after Washington’s season might have changed irreperably:
— There isn’t likely to be anything new on Stanback until Monday’s press conference, if then. Tyrone Willingham likes to play these things as coyly as possible. If you remember, he was still insisting three days after the OSU game last year that there was a chance Johnny DuRocher could play when DuRocher himself had said he was out for the season.
— I see UW is a 24-point underdog at Cal. That’s as much a testament to Cal, as anything, but also may show a little how Vegas is suddenly unsure of UW’s future.
—- UW received no votes in either major poll. If they had won, I figured they would have been ranked.
— A lot of you have asked about Marcel Reece and why he isn’t playing more. I think it’s just what it appears to be — he’s a JC guy who showed up out of shape and has to learn the system. From what I understand, they are only comfortable playing him in the slot right now and Cody Ellis has emerged there, so Reece is finding it hard to get on the field.
— I thought going into the year OSU would have one of the best O-lines in the Pac-10 and didn’t understand why it hadn’t been playing better earlier in the year. I think it finally came to life against UW, unfortunately for the Huskies.
— It got kind of overshadowed, but Kenny James received a stinger on one of the last plays of the game. Willingham said none of the injuries Saturday other than Stanback’s would hold anybody out, but a stinger could be tough for a tailback.
— Interesting take from The Oregonian about OSU linebacker Derrick Doggett saying he wanted to prove he was as fast as Stanback. Doggett undoubtedly played well. Left unsaid is that Stanback entered the game with a hip pointer and seemed noticeably more hesitant much of the day before suffering his foot injury. UW coaches said they never considered taking him out, however.
