The view from Cal

Two interesting reads out of the Bay Area today.
First, here’s a column by Jon Wilner, the college football writer for the San Jose Mercury News, on Washington and Tyrone Willingham. Wilner covered much of Willingham’s tenure at Stanford and knows him well.
The premise of his story is that UW’s season is already a success.
Do you guys agree with that? And do you guys agree with the idea that the thinking in Seattle was UW was three to four years away from being as competitive as it has been to date?
I have a slightly different take and think the rest of the season is very relevant in showing just how far this team really has come. A collapse from here, and a lot of the momentum built early will have been stalled, especially considering that there are a lot of key seniors on this team.
Depending on how you determine the starting lineup, the Huskies have about 11 senior starters (depending on which receiver starts, whether Goldson starts, etc.), meaning there will be some significant holes to fill next year.
The second story is an interesting feature on Cal defensive back Brandon Hampton evolving from equipment manager early in his career to starting safety.
I’ll also link to our Husky page from today where among the stories I wrote was a little look at Greyson Gunheim’s season to date. He admitted yesterday he isn’t playing how he’d hoped and said the preseason knee injury he suffered might be the reason. May be that that knee injury was more significant than we thought at the time.
