Dennis Erickson to Arizona State? (Updated)

That’s what Oregonian columnist John Canzano says is a possibility, anyway, reporting that the school and Erickson have begun talking.
It wouldn’t be the first time. The rumor mill had it that Erickson was offered the Arizona State job in 2000 when Dirk Koetter was hired, instead. But that was right when Erickson was in the process of leading Oregon State to the Fiesta Bowl and the timing was bad for him to pursue ASU.
Canzano lays out a good case for why this makes a lot of sense — not that it’s hard to see why it makes sense given Erickson’s track record. The biggest question might be whether Erickson really wants to make a move again after returning to Idaho where his head coaching career began in 1982.
Here’s another report about that report that includes some good salary info for Erickson.
For what it’s worth, Erickson turns 60 in March, meaning he may not have a ton of chances left at jobs like this.
It’s also worth noting that there are two UW assistants with longtime ties to Erickson — offensive coordinator Tim Lappano and receivers coach Eric Yarber.
UPDATE – Here’s Jim Meehan’s Idaho Vandals blog from the Spokesman-Review with some quotes from Erickson saying he hasn’t talked with ASU but that he’d “probably take a look” if ASU called. Also note the list of candidates. No Rick Neuheisel there. He’s easy to throw out as a rumor because of his ties to Tempe and the Pac-10, but so far, there doesn’t appear to be any substance to it.
