Bowl season kicks off

You know you’ve really been without power for a long time when you look in the morning paper and lament the fact that you probably won’t be able to watch the Poinsettia Bowl.
Yes, I’m still without power at my house and apparently will be for several more days, which means I probably won’t get to watch TCU and Northern Illinois kick off the 32-game bowl season tonight.
But that doesn’t mean we can’t have some fun with it.
At least one of you mentioned that we should pick the bowl games on here to keep the blog going during the off-season, and that sounded like a good idea to me.
What I think we’ll do is just pick them as they go.
First, here’s a list of all the games courtesy of SI.com.
Second, here’s a good primer on the bowl season from my Times colleague Bud Withers.
Lastly, here’s my pick on the first game tonight — TCU 31, Northern Illinois 21. I think Garrett Wolfe will do just enough to allow NIU to cover the 11-point spread.
However, TCU was third in the nation in run defense this year, as this breakdown indicates, so Wolfe will have his work cut out for him.
