Former Husky coach passes

We had a couple of football stories in the paper today and I’d like to alert you to both of them here.
First, Tom Tipps, a defensive coordinator for UW from 1957-69, died at age 90 ove the weekend. Here’s the story we had in today’s paper.
As the story explains, Tipps was a quite influential figure in the history of Husky football, helping Jim Owens rebuild the program. He was the coach for players such as Rick Redman and Jim Lambright and helped Owens establish a tradition of tough football that defined UW for decades.
Here’s a column by the legendary Emmett Watson from 1999 putting some of those teams in perspective.
Also, here’s our update on UW’s recruiting over the weekend. Included is a note on punter Jared Ballman. I talked with him for a while and Ballman is understandably struggling with tragedy of the auto accident last month — he just as understandably wanted to say only so much about it.
But he also said it won’t derail his college football plans and he fully intends to come to UW this spring. As noted in the story, he was very appreciative of a recent visit from UW coach Tyrone Willingham.
