Additional roster notes

We posted the updated UW spring roster here a little earlier and here it is again.
As some of you may have noted, Johnny DuRocher’s name is included.
That doesn’t mean he’s returning to the field just yet, however.
The official word is that DuRocher remains on the roster because he is still on a football scholarship and because he has not completely ruled out playing football this season. He won’t be taking part in spring practice, however, and later rosters will apparently include the notation that DuRocher is not currently an active member of the team.
Also, the roster lists players by academic year instead of athletic eligibility. Soon, however, the roster will apparently list players in both ways so people will be able to determine just how much eligibility players have.
As of now, there are officially 40 seniors on the roster, though many are actually fourth-year juniors and could return for another season in 2008.
This is in part a reaction to the “suddenly senior” controversy of last fall. Washington coach Tyrone Willingham believes that fifth years have to be earned, and so the roster is now reflecting that philosophy. In past years, UW players were listed solely by athletic eligibility. Stanford, one of Willingham’s former schools, also lists players by both athletic and academic standing.
