Pac-10 hires new coordinator of officiating

The Pac-10 today hired a new coordinator of football officiating, and maybe this will help the conference boost its image in that department after some notable issues the last few years.
Here’s the official release from the Pac-10
Dave Cutaia, a veteran Pac-10 official, has been appointed Coordinator of Football Officiating for the Conference, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Cutaia, a resident of Benicia, Ca., succeeds Verle Sorgen, who retired in March after 21 years as Coordinator.
The new Coordinator has been a Pac-10 official for 24 years, including the last six as a referee. He also has officiated basketball and baseball on the college and high school levels. For 27 years he has served as Coordinator of Football Officiating for a number of high school leagues in the East Bay area of San Francisco.
Professionally, he has a 34-year career in law enforcement, including 21 years in command positions. Currently, Cutaia is Chief of Police in Martinez, Ca., a position he has held for eight years, and from which he will retire in December. He previously was a commander for 13 years.
“The Pac-10 is fortunate to be able to attract as its Coordinator a person with Dave Cutaia’s combination of on-field officiating experience and excellent performance and officiating administrative experience,” Hansen said. “He is an outstanding referee, and I received many compliments about the manner in which he leads his crew from individuals knowledgeable about officiating as I conducted the search process for this position. He also has a strong knowledge and understanding of the football rules and how to apply them to a game.
“His long service as a coordinator also will serve him and the Conference well in his new role. His background on and off the field is unique.
“I expect Dave Cutaia to serve the Conference with the same high level of ability and dedication as Verle Sorgen and Verles predecessor, Jack Sprenger, and for the Pac-10s football officiating program to continue to be highly regarded and to serve our football teams and football student-athletes with distinction under his leadership.”
Said Cutaia: “I am very honored regarding the confidence that Tom Hansen and the Pac-10 have shown in me by selecting me for this very important position. I look forward to continuing the fine tradition of football officiating in the Pac-10.”
Cutaia is a native of Oakland, Ca. He attended California State University Hayward. He is married and has three grown children.
