Garcia granted additional year

University of Washington center Juan Garcia has been granted an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA, the school announced today.
That makes Garcia a junior in eligibility, meaning he can play this season and in 2008. Garcia had previously been listed as a fifth-year senior for the 2007 season.
Garcia arrived at UW in 2003 and sat out that season as a partial qualifier. He then missed the entire 2004 and 2005 seasons with injuries — he suffered leg and ankle injuries in the spring of 2004 that held him out of that season, and then a shoulder injury in 2005 that cost him that season.
Technically, what he was granted today was an extension of his five-year clock, allowing him to also play in the 2008 season.
Getting Garcia back for another year now means the Huskies will have only one projected starting offensive linemen for this season that will be in his last year of eligibility — right tackle Chad Macklin.
The other four projected starters could return in 2008, an obviously positive sign for the future for the Huskies.
The only other player with no eligibility left beyond 2007 who is in UW’s two-deep on the O-line is backup tackle Eric Berglund.
After not playing at all his first three seasons, Garcia played every down for the Huskies last year at center. He also earned the team’s Academic Excellence Award.
Here’s a story I wrote on Garcia year ago that goes into a lot more detail on his history.
Garcia is a graduate of Eisenhower High in Yakima.
