A few more notes

Media day is wrapping up, with the coaches and players headed back home.
Here are a few more notes as the doors start to close:
NO UNIFORM CHANGE YET: Asked UW coach Tyrone Willingham whether a decision had been made on putting the names back on the uniforms and he said it was “still too early” to know. However, he dropped a hint when he said he will always be about “team before self.” It’s that motto that helped convince Willingham to take the names off the jerseys prior to his first season in 2005. Rumor is jerseys have been purchased with names and without names so the Huskies can go whichever way they want at a moment’s notice.
HUSKIES HAPPY WITH WORKOUTS: You wouldn’t expect a player at media day to say anything other than that the team has worked hard in the off-season. But UW defensive end Greyson Gunheim insisted the commitment was a a little greater this summer than in past years.
For one thing, Gunheim said the format was changed a bit with all players working together at 6:50 a.m. four mornings a week — Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. In past years, Gunheim said there were two sessions — morning and afternoon — and players could attend either one. But it was decided this year to have everyone work out in the morning (with some exceptions made when players weren’t able to be there for class or job reasons).
“A lot of the players wanted to get it out of the way so they could go to class or work or to the lake or something like that,” Gunheim said. “It’s one of those things were it makes the team kind of tougher because nobody wants to get up that early and come in and lift weights and run but a lot of the team has been showing up to all of them and I think it will make us that much better. Think we are in real good shape.”
ATKINS GONE: In the only real apparent personnel news for the Huskies, it looks as if defensive end Anthony Atkins is out of UW’s plans. Atkins, a senior who missed last season for academic reasons, is not on the current roster and it doesn’t sound as if he will be back. UW coach Tyrone Willingham, however, said he won’t officially confirm any personnel news until the beginning of practices next week. Atkins wasn’t expected to play much of a role for UW this season.
Willingham said in later interview sessions that there was no other personnel news to announce at this time. Atkins was signed before the 2006 season as part of Willingham’s first full recruiting class at UW.
COUGS TAKE SOME HITS: The rival Cougars had some more significant personnel news with projected starting right guard Andy Roof suspended for the fall quarter after having a third alcohol violation. It was also announced that linebacker Jason Stripling and receiver Michael Willis are academically ineligible. Stripling was in contention to start but was also battling a shoulder injury.
