Thursday afternoon update

I wasn’t out at UW today but Tom Wyrwich of our staff was and filed a few notes and comments from Tyrone Willingham’s daily meeting with the media.
Of most immediate interest is the fact that CB Byron Davenport did not practice Wednesday due to his hamstring injury with Willingham saying that if he did not practice on Thursday then he likely won’t be playing Saturday. Sounds like a game-time decision.
Better news on G Casey Bulyca, whom Willingham said “did virtually all of practice” on Wednesday and should be ready for Saturday.
Willingham also said that RB Louis Rankin “is not 100 percent, but I think he’ll be fine.”
Willingham elaborated to say that he can’t give a precise percentage for Rankin’s eahtly but that “I do know he’s well enough for us not to worry about adjusting or changing what we have planned.”
SAVANNAH IN RED: Tom also reports that LB E.J. Savannah was in red during practice, though Willingham did not mention it during his press briefing, so it’s uncertain what his injury may be, or how severe.
MORE NOTES:
As for Willingham’s thoughts on Wednesday’s practice, he said: “It was a good practice. Got back to what I would say is a normal practice. Not an after the break practice. Pretty well-focused, good energy. Still your normal mistakes, ups and downs but good practice.
On Ohio State: “I think the number one thing I’m concerned about is not just their talent level, but they had a couple ballgames that maybe they did not need to show all that they have, and that they have been bringing their guys along patiently, just kind of waiting for the right kind of situation to get going. This, to me, sounds like the perfect game, the game right before they start the Big Ten season, so I think they’d probably be looking to get everything in order this week.”
He was also asked about the difference in being 2-0 this year as opposed to when UW was 4-1 last season: “I’m kind of hard-pressed to remember how everyone responded right now, but I hope there’s a certain confidence and a certain calm that comes with this team that allows it to understand where we are right now. We’re excited, we’re fortunate to be 2-0. At the same time, we believe there’s a lot of work for us to do.”
