Carroll raves about Locker

Sorry, didn’t get around to doing the Pac-10 notebook from the coaches conference fall today as I’ve done the last few weeks, in part due to some traffic problems.
But I did hear USC’s Pete Carroll again rave about UW’s Jake Locker, something he’s done a few times now.
Asked about Locker, Carroll said “he’s the best guy to come into the conference in a long time. He’s an extraordinary talent.
“More than anything, it’s his competitiveness that I like and how tough he is. I’ve been just wowed by the guy the last few days. I was hearing hearing about him and then I got to see him, and he’s the real deal. He’ll be considered one of the best guys in this conference, and he already is that. When he has a couple of years of experience, he is going to be phenomenal.”
Locker said Monday that USC recruited him briefly but that it didn’t go far enough for Locker to know whether they wanted him as a safety or a quarterback.
Speaking of Locker, UW offensive coordinator Tim Lappano said today that Locker “got his bell rung” pretty good on a sack in the third quarter. He said that has helped convince Locker even more of taking steps to protect himself when running the ball.
Lappano said he and Locker looked at tapes this week of Oregon’s Dennis Dixon and Isaiah Stanback last year of the best ways to get down and get out of harm’s way.
I’ll have more from Lappano later.
