On the free safety situation

I wrote about the free safety situation today in the wake of the news that Jason Wells is likely out for the season.
As happens from time to time, the story got cut a little bit and a few things I intended for the original version had to be removed.
Among those were Nate Williams saying that “I think I’d be pretty ready” if he had to play free safety against Arizona State, while admitting it’s a vast difference from high school.
“In high school I would come just roam around wherever I wanted,” he said. “But now you have to be in a certain spot.”
Williams was sidelined most of the game Saturday after he was nailed hard by USC’s Rey Maualuga on a punt and suffered a minor concussion and had the wind knocked out of him.
“I didn’t see him,” Williams said. “That’s probably the hardest I’ve ever been hit. My chest is still a little sore, but other than that I’m all right.”
UW coach Tyrone Willingham mentioned Harris and Williams, in that order, when talking about the free safety spot Thursday, though he also said some other young players could work into the mix, as well.
But as the story points out, there’s a lot to know to play free safety — understanding the defense, algining everyone the back seven, etc. — so experience is huge. That will be especially critical going against the next two teams on UW’s schedule, Arizona State and Oregon, which each have explosive offenses.
