Wednesday A.M. links

For our main story today I wrote about Greyson Gunheim and his admitted disappointment in his season to date.
One of you commented the other day how down Gunheim seemed on a KJR-AM interview on Monday. I actually talked to Gunheim last week and got the same vibe, that he seems rather frustrated about his lack of production so far.
Why he’s struggling is surely a combination of a lot of things, as is always the case in football — facing tough opponents the last few weeks; being double-teamed; facing opponents who like the quick passing game, etc.
But as I detail in the story, ASU has been giving up a ton of sacks — 22, the most in the Pac-10 — so a lot of those rationales go out the window this week. If UW doesn’t get to Rudy Carpenter at least a few times, it’ll be a really long night.
I also wrote today about some of the close relationships between the two coaching staffs focusing on Tim Lappano’s ties to Dennis Erickson and others on the ASU staff. One I didn’t mention was Eric Yarber, who was obviously on the UW staff the last two years before leaving for ASU.
We’ve seen this a lot through the years, however — in the Gilbertson era, seemed like every week there was someone on the other side who had deep ties to Gilby or someone else on the UW staff — and I’m not sure it ever really impacts the game a whole lot.
Truth is, do this long and all these coaches get to know each other pretty well, be it on the recruiting trail, at conventions, or merely coaching against each other for a long time.
IN OTHER NEWS…
— Here’s an ASU notebook from the Arizona Republic noting that the Sun Devils used some running backs to try to replicate Jake Locker in practice Tuesday. Erickson has been very high on Locker, if you recall, praising him this summer at Pac-10 media day by saying he was as good a QB as he had ever seen in high school. This week, he called him similar to Vince Young.
— The Republic’s ASU blog says attendance should be in the 60,000-64,000 range this weekened.
— Here’s the East Valley Tribune’s notebook with a similar note about Locker as well as an item on ASU receiver Rudy Burgess.
— The East Valley Tribune also has this story on Locker.
— For those wondering about what’s going on with the Reggie Bush investigation at USC, here’s an update from the LA Times.
— The Eugene Register-Guard Pac-10 notebook has lots of good stuff on Stanford, as well as an updated conference ranking that has UW at No. 8.
— The LA Times also has this take on what’s going wrong at USC on the field.
