At the stadium

I’ve arrived at the new Stanford Stadium, and this will definitely be a different atmosphere than any other game I’ve covered here.
No more track, no more thousands of seats miles away. Instead, there are 50,000 comupact seats, looking right down on the action. About 35,000 are expected today, so it won’t be a sell out, but I’m thinking the crowd may be a little more of a factor than it has been in the past.
And it’s a beautiful day here — not a cloud in the sky and a current temperature of about 74. So a perfect fall afternoon for football.
— Here’s my story for today, focusing on the return of Tyrone Willingham to where he made his name. Maybe a fitting place for what looms as a turning point game for him at UW.
— Also had this story today on three former Huskies coaching at Seattle PrepScott White, Josh Okoebor and Stanley Daniels.
— Willingham has been back here only once since leaving, a 57-7 win with Notre Dame in 2003. The Palo Alto Daily News pointed out that in that game, Willingham called for a fake punt with the Irish up by 50 in the fourth quarter. I couldn’t find the link to that story, but here’s a story from 2003 detailing what happened. The Palo Alto story today wondered if some of the fifth-year seniors for Stanford might remember that play and be a little fired up today.
— The Palo Alto Daily News referred to the game as basically make-or-break for the Cardinal and led off with this statement — “If Washington isn’t the cure-all tonic for a stalled Stanford offense, then there isn’t a team in the Pac-10 that is.”
— The San Jose Mercury News likewise quotes Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh as calling the game “the defining game of the season.”
— And here’s the San Francisco Chronicle preview of the game today.
I’ll check back later for some pre-game thoughts and we’ll have our usual running game thread, as well.
