Pre-game notes (and it’s raining hard)

Though at least it’s not raining men, a horrid song that often pops into my head on days like this.
Talked to Cal beat writer who said the steady downpour at Husky Stadium right now is pretty similar to what the Bears had last week against USC. Not sure the weather favors anyone other than maybe the coffee stands.
As I write this at about 10:55, Carl Bonnell and Jake Locker are warming up on the field. Locker is wearing uniform pants, so looks like he will be in uniform today. But Bonnell is expected to start.
Here’s my story for today focusing in part on how UW gets motivated now that a shot at a bowl game is out of the window. Obviously, motivation is different for everyone, especially on a team made up of 100 or so players. But at some point, a game like this in weather like this may just come down to who wants it more.
I mentioned in the story that there are 18 (scholarship) seniors who are now assured of never playing in a bowl game.
There are also 14 other players on the roster listed as seniors who could return for another season. I didn’t have space to list them in the story, but here they are: Casey Bulyca, Mesphin Forrester, Juan Garcia (can return for a sixth season and is almost certain to), Michael Gottlieb, Darin Harris, Charles Hawkins, Johnie Kirton, Luke Kravitz, Sir Aaron Mason, Jordan Murchison, Jovan O’Cconnor, Trenton Tuiasosopo, Jordan White-Frisbee, Walt Winter.
Here, also, is our scouting report for today’s game.
ALSO. …
— Here’s the Bears Blog from the Contra Costa Times which will keep you up to date on your Cal needs through the day.
— Here’s the Cal preview from the Contra Costa Times today focusing on Cal’s motivation now that its big goals are gone.
— The San Francisco Chronicle calls today’s game dull other than the drama associated with the quarterback spot for both teams.
UW QB recruit Dominique Blackman and his Carson High team won their first round playoff game.
— UW recruit Terrance Dailey has been nominated as a Sacramento Bee Offensive Player of the Year.
I’ll check back in a little later, probably with our game thread as kickoff nears.
