Gordy Guinn passes away

Also in our paper Sunday was news of another former Husky passing away, Gordy Guinn, who lettered from 1970-72 as a defensive tackle, earning a legacy as one of the team’s best linemen of that era.
According to the 1973 UW media guide, Guinn was the fifth-leading tackler for the 1972 team, which was Sonny Sixkiller’s senior year. He made 99 tackles that season as UW finished 8-3.
Guinn also led the 1971 team in tackles, which also finished 8-3, with 140 and earned All-Pac-8 First Team honors both seasons. He also scored a TD in 1971 returning a fumble 52 yards
At the time, he was known for excelling in the trenches despite standing just 6-foot (he weighed 224 pounds).
“Proves you don’t have to be tall to play on the line,” it read in the 1972 UW media guide. He was a Purple Helmet winner and also was the team’s Lineman of the Year and Most Improved Player in 1971.
He was a 1969 graduate of Renton High and after his playing days worked locally as a project manager for RC Painting Inc. in Woodinville. He was 56 when he died on March 7.
A memorial service will be held March 29, 2008 at 3 p.m. at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church Hall in Seattle.
