Will budget cuts impact athletics?

The lead story in our paper today was not a happy one for either of the participants in this week’s Apple Cup —- news that all the state’s colleges and universities may see the money they get from the state cut by up 20 percent.
This could have ramifications on UW athletics, especially the pursuit for $150 million for a renovation of Husky Stadium. A school spokesman says in the article that it’s “obviously going to be difficult” to get the funding for Husky Stadium in light of this news.
It might also have an impact on the search for a new coach. Public universities always have to be wary of the perception of what they are paying their highest-paid coaches, and who knows if this might compel them to ratchet down just a bit what they have been prepared to offer.
