Willingham’s post-game comments

I’m going through the questions and I’ve gotten a few about Tyrone Willingham’s post-game comments on the Husky Radio Network.
I didn’t hear them at the time as I was in Pullman doing other interviews, etc., and didn’t have access to the radio. I did just hear a brief excerpt on KJR where Willingham was asked about the long pass play to Jared Karstetter in the final minute and he said that he didn’t understand what was going through the mind of his player at that time, an apparent reference to Quinton Richardson (I don’t think he specifically mentioned Richardson). I think the exact quote was “you wonder just what is going through that young man’s head.”
That’s pretty similar to what he said to us afterward when he said that “it was the right defense” and that “we just didn’t track the ball.”
The statements, particularly the one made on the radio, are being heavily debated on KJR-AM this morning with former UW QB Hugh Millen saying they were inappropriate and that they were “chump” comments.
The comments to us also came in the same press conference, which only lasted about four-and-a-half minutes, in which he said that while he takes responsibility for what is going on “it should also be noted the day that I arrived the situation that the program was in.”
Times columnist Jerry Brewer took Willingham to task for those comments in his column on Sunday.
I’ve written that I think the comparisons to four years ago aren’t real appropriate anymore — four years is enough time to turn things around, and left unsaid by Willingham is that UW had just had 27 straight non-losing seasons prior to the 2004 collapse. There was no long tradition of losing at that time, and how much talent was on hand is open for heavy debate. I tried to
I wrote a story last week trying to compare where UW is now to where it was in 2004. Obviously, this season looks even worse now.
As for Willingham’s comments, ultimately he’s speaking to the fan base through us so what may be most important is what you guys think.
