Kiffin to Tennessee?

Lots of buzz out there today that Lane Kiffin will soon be named the head coach at Tennessee.
This not only eliminates one coach thought by many to be a leading option for the Huskies, but if true, also raises some questions as to who out there is really available.
This column speculates that UT also tried to make runs at Butch Davis and Mike Leach. If those guys didn’t go to Tennessee, would they want to go to UW? In Davis’ case, everything of late indicates he has no interest in moving anywhere.
That column also mentions Mike Riley, who I think some at UW wouldn’t mind pursuing, as well — Riley would have been a leading candidate in 1998 when Rick Neuheisel got the job had he not taken the San Diego Chargers job. But it’s hard to see Riley leaving OSU right now and he has said his intent is to stay in Corvallis as long as he can.
Also, here’s a story on possible candidates at San Diego State, which gives a good rundown of a few guys who have been mentioned at UW, and also includes the interesting info that Dennis Green is teaching a sports business class at San Diego State for $12,000 a year.
And if Pat Hill is really in the running at UW as much as some think, he has a chance to make a real statement Friday when the Bulldogs play at Boise State. That will be the final regular season game of the year for two coaches thought on UW’s list — Chris Petersen obviously being the other, though reports are that he is discussing an extension and isn’t leaving BSU.
Also, really interesting news out of Notre Dame today that Charlies Weis’ buyout may not be as big as everyone thinks. If so, and if the Irish got tattooed by USC Saturday as I fully expect, there could be another high-profile job open next week that will create that much more competition for the Huskies.
Here also is an update on the Clemson job featuring a couple of coaches linked to UW, as well. That story mentions Air Force coach Troy Calhoun, who has apparently been contacted by Clemson and Tennessee but not UW.
Finally, here’s a look at possible candidates at Utah State, where former UW associate AD Scott Barnes is now the AD. One of the candidates is former UW defensive coordinator Kent Baer.
All for now.
