James on Sarkisian

Former Husky coach Don James was a guest on KJR-AM this morning and spoke a little about Washington’s new coach, Steve Sarkisian.
He said he talked briefly with Sarkisian on Monday afternoon to “wish him well.”
But otherwise, James said he has had no real interaction with Sarkisian and doesn’t know much about him other than what he’s read.
“I’m for the University and that’s my University and for this football team and these players and for the coaches,” he said. “. … I’m for whatever the (Mark Emmert and Scott Woodward decide) and I just want them to work.”
James said “the one thing he did I was really pleased to here is that he was out recruiting (Monday afternoon).”
He said the two biggest tasks for Sarkisian right now are putting together a staff and recruiting, and then installing a winter program.
James said he wasn’t involved in the hiring process in any way.
Asked about Sarkisian’s plan to be the offensive play-caller, James said that wasn’t something he ever wanted to do.
“Everybody is different,” he said. “I didn’t feel like I had a need to coach (one side of the ball). I didn’t want to be at one end of the field coaching that side of the ball and not know what is going on on the other end. If you hire coaches you have to let them coach. So I wanted to see it all. I was just different.”
