Long to San Diego State — other notes

A few links as life begins to get back to normal.
— As we reported here a while ago, Rocky Long won’t be coming to UW to be the new defensive coordinator for the Huskies. He is instead heading to San Diego State, according to this story today. As the story indicates, Long and new SDSU coach Brady Hoke have worked together previously. That was something I heard that Long was looking for a situation where he had some familiarity with the head coach.
— UCLA may also be in the offing for a new DC as it is anticipated that DeWayne Walker could be named today as the new head coach at New Mexico State, according to the LA Daily News. The paper reports Walker is likely to take the job if offered.
— And while it’s been thought that Ken Norton Jr. will just head from USC to UCLA to fill the opening, Norton told the LA Times today that he plans to stay at USC and is in fact mad that UCLA coaches have been telling recruits that he’s ready to leave the Trojans. Sounds like another little controversy for Rick Neuheisel.
— So does that leave UW’s DC job to former Husky Nigel Burton? It’s only speculation, but might be worth watching Nevada play in the Humanitarian Bowl tomorrow afternoon.
— Here’s one of the many stories on Steve Sarkisian filling dual roles for a few more days and his feelings as his USC days close. But I’m told he’s been getting plenty done for UW, as well, while working at USC this week — UW AD Scott Woodward said at the basketball game last night that he had been on the phone with Sarkisian at 9 p.m. Saturday night going over some things. Woodward plans to fly to LA tomorrow to be in attendance at the Rose Bowl.
All for now but more answers to questions later.
