A little reading on Nick Holt

Here are a few stories I’ve found out there on Nick Holt, soon to be officially named as UW’s defensive coordinator:
— Here’s a column from the Orange County Register just last week with some interesting insight on how Holt ran the defense at USC, leading off with the fact that the team did live tackling every day in practice. That will be a big shift for the current UW players as the Huskies rarely did live tackling in practice under Tyrone Willingham, who always seemed pretty nervous about guys getting hurt in practice. I think USC has suffered a few practice injuries through the years, but they’ve always thought the tradeoff was worth it.
— Here’s a 2006 story with some good background on Holt as well as the note that he was a linebacker at Pacific for a year when Pete Carroll was just getting his coaching career started. It also details Holt’s rapid move that year from Idaho head coach to USC DC.
— Here’s a press release from a year ago when Holt was named as FootballScoop.com’s defensive coordinator of the year.
— Here’s a 2006 story from the Orange Country Register that indicates Holt at the time was calling plays from the sidelines but with input from Carroll. However, Carroll agreed to give up some control to lure Holt back from Idaho.
— Here’s a radio blog interview with Holt from earlier this year.
All for now.
