Draft decisions impact Huskies

The deadline for declaring early for the NFL Draft is tomorrow. And it’s a deadline that has only peripherally impacted the Huskies for quite a while — Reggie Williams and Tank Johnson in 2003 were the last UW players to leave early, and Johnson was essentially encouraged to leave by then-coach Keith Gilbertson.
How it does impact the Huskies in what kind of opponents they may face next year.
Specifically, two of the first three teams on UW’s 2009 schedule — USC and LSU — have had multiple players faced with the decision to stay or leave.
Both have had mixed results.
USC got a surprise Tuesday when safety Taylor Mays announced he was coming back, but took a hit today when quarterback Mark Sanchez reportedly decided to turn pro.
That will leave USC breaking in a new QB next season, likely either junior Mitch Mustain or sophomore Aaron Corp, a situation Ted Miller does a nice job of detailing here.
UW hosts USC on Sept. 19 at Husky Stadium. It will host San Jose State and play at Ohio State in its first two games before traveling to Seattle.
LSU, meanwhile, got some mixed news with running back Charles Scott and tackle Ciron Black saying they are returning but WR Brandon LaFell and DE Ricky Jean-Francois saying they are leaving.
LSU, however, has been pegged as a possible top five team heading into next season. Here’s a decent overview of LSU’s 2008 season with a brief look ahead to 2009.
